TEPA celebrating the quiet strength behind the scenes
As we celebrate Women’s Month this August, the Tyre, Equipment, Parts Association (TEPA), is honoured to recognise the invaluable contributions of women whose dedication often goes unseen, but whose impact is deeply felt. Among these unsung heroes are Marietjie Smith, TEPA’s Associational Operations Coordinator and Personal Assistant to the National Director of TEPA and SAPRA, and Moipone Nyambi, the dynamic Associational Representative for both TEPA and SAPRA.
While their roles differ, both women share a quiet strength, tireless work ethic, and a deep-rooted passion for member support. Marietjie is the calm and steady force ensuring operational excellence, while Moipone brings relational depth and a drive for advocacy and inclusion across two major sectors. Whether orchestrating major industry events, responding to member queries, or conducting outreach in underserved communities, these women exemplify what it means to lead with purpose behind the scenes. Their stories remind us that real progress is built on patience, trust, consistency – and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed.
This Women’s Month, TEPA salutes both Marietjie and Moipone, and all the incredible women like them, who are quietly shaping the future of our industry from the inside out.
For those who know her, Marietjie Smith is the calm centre in the eye of the storm – the one who ensures things keep ticking along, no matter how chaotic the day. From managing member queries to orchestrating major industry events, her days are packed with activity – and purpose. “A typical day for me involves meetings, phone calls, emails, onboarding new members, and supporting my team with queries. I focus on ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the associations,” she explains.
Despite her preference for staying out of the spotlight, Marietjie’s behind-the-scenes strength is impossible to ignore. She finds the most satisfaction in interacting with members and solving problems. “It’s incredibly rewarding to provide support and build meaningful connections through those interactions.” Of course, coordination at this level is not without challenges. “Keeping everyone aligned and everything in sync can be complex, but I thrive on challenges. They give me an opportunity to grow and improve systems.”
Known for her exceptional calm under pressure, she attributes her success to patience, focus, and strong organisation. “Staying grounded helps me to keep moving forward. Tomorrow is always a new start – do what you can today and never hesitate to ask for help.” Her advice to other women working in supporting roles is simple but powerful: “Do your best, give it your all, and breathe.”
Marietjie’s journey in the automotive sector has revealed not only her own capabilities but her passion for what she does. “I never imagined I would be in this position, but I’ve discovered that this is exactly where I’m meant to be, and I genuinely love it.” When asked what inspires her to keep going, even when her work isn’t always seen, she answers from the heart: “Each day presents a new opportunity to make a meaningful difference. That’s what drives me.”
To Marietjie, Women’s Month is a time of recognition for all women, especially those working quietly in the background. “These women are the backbone of our organisations. Acknowledging their efforts is not just about appreciation – it fosters a culture of respect, inclusion, and continued excellence.”
Moipone Nyambi joined the RMI six years ago, transitioning from the insurance industry. “I developed a deep appreciation for the challenges facing businesses in areas like compliance, customer service and sustainability,” she says. “I was inspired to shift from company-specific solutions to something more impactful – supporting the growth and development of individuals and their businesses.”
As the Associational Representative for both TEPA and SAPRA, her role is all-encompassing and dynamic. From managing member applications and renewals to facilitating compliance workshops and visiting members on site, Moipone’s days are filled with meaningful engagement. “Being able to build strong relationships and seeing how our support helps businesses thrive is incredibly rewarding. I’ve also had the privilege of working on outreach initiatives with deaf children and, more recently, with Kids Haven – those moments remind me of the bigger purpose in what we do.”
Working across two distinct associations presents its own challenges, but Moipone approaches each with a deep understanding and unwavering commitment. “While TEPA and SAPRA differ in their focus, my approach is always grounded in trust, consistency, and responsiveness. I work hard to ensure each association’s unique needs are addressed while upholding the shared values of the RMI.”
Her greatest strength lies in her ability to connect. Whether supporting a large corporate or a small independent workshop, Moipone listens to understand – not just to respond. “Our members want to feel seen, heard and respected. When that happens, they stay loyal, and we build something truly valuable.” Being a woman in what remains a male-dominated industry has not deterred her – in fact, it’s been a source of strength. “It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. I’ve learnt to stand firm, speak with confidence and embrace the relational, intuitive side of my work. Being a woman in this space isn’t a limitation – it’s an asset. And yes, I’m still learning how to change a tyre – that’s my next challenge!”
Her advice to young women entering the sector is clear: “Come in with confidence, purpose and authenticity. Your voice matters. The industry is evolving, and there is space for your ideas. Push through the challenges – they’re shaping you into the professional you’re meant to be.”
For Moipone, Women’s Month is about more than just celebration. “It’s about recognition, inclusion, and creating space for the next generation. We need to honour the women working quietly behind the scenes – the relationship-builders, the mentors, the frontline support. Their impact is just as powerful.” Looking ahead, she’s excited about making an even bigger impact. “Professionally, I want to ensure that even members in rural or underserved areas are heard and supported. Personally, I’m working on completing my Business and Marketing studies – and, of course, finally learning to change that tyre!”
TEPA is a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI).
