World Skills (WS) International is considered the leading global organisation promoting skills as well as the global hub for skills development and training. The organisation operates through competitions, skills knowledge exchanges and transfers which are promoted internationally through cooperation and development between industry, government, technical institutions and grass-root community projects.
The programme offers young professionals around the world the opportunity to excel in the skill of their choice at an international platform created for the participation of more than 70 countries, and which will take place later this year in Abu Dhabi. World Skills also offers opportunities for industry bench-marking skills, effective and best teaching practices, sustainable training systems, life skills development, and so much more.
The competition is held every 2 years and attracts approximately 1200 competitors from more than 70 countries and regions competing in 50 skills-based competitions. SAMBRA' sees its role in this programme as one of providing assistance, advice and monitoring of the training of local participants. One such hopeful is South African gold medalist, Yaqoob. Yaqoob is a False Bay College apprentice and has been placed with a SAMBRA SR Accredited member for the duration of his training and preparation.
False Bay College and SAMBRA Western Cape have collaborating closely, not only on the WS candidate, but also to build a stronger bridge between industry, insurers, manufacturers, equipment suppliers and education / training / colleges. This area is a concern that has been underlined by Edwin Martin, SAMBRA National Director at recent meetings with WS role players.
SAMBRA and the RMI were also involved – at World Skills South Africa Industry Expert, Daniel Valihu's request – in assisting with the regional competition that took place in KZN earlier this year.
Although preparation time is very short (only 5 months), SAMBRA and the RMI both confirm their commitment to assisting any candidate who is to represent SA and the SA Motor Industry, to obtain as many technical and life skills as possible to give him or her the confidence to compete on the world stage.
