RMI congratulates Motheo TVET College on a milestone graduation
The RMI has extended its congratulations to Motheo TVET College on hosting its 2025 graduation and industry ceremony earlier this month at its National Artisan Development Academy campus in Bloemfontein. Over two days, Motheo celebrated the achievements of 1,800 graduates across four sessions, recognising not only their academic success but also their readiness to step into the world of work.
Mr Cliford Machete, National Spokesperson for the South African Deaf Youth Development Organisation (SADYDO), a Deaf educator and proud Motheo alumnus. Machete registered as a Management Assistant at Motheo’s Business Studies faculty in 2013 and went on to graduate in 2015, making history as the first Deaf person to serve as Disability Officer of the Student Representative Council at the College. Machete said
“Motheo TVET College gave me my first qualification and with it the opportunity to grow. To the graduates, remember your families who have walked this journey with you, and celebrate this milestone with pride. Life has no remote – get up and change it yourself. If you cannot find a job immediately, push forward and never give up on your dream. Motheo is here to guide you. My journey is proof that you can persevere, and with South African Sign Language now officially recognised as our 12th language, I encourage you to build your future with courage and hope.”
Prof. Dipiloane Phutsisi, Principal of Motheo TVET College, reaffirmed the institution’s strong commitment to building meaningful partnerships with industry, both locally and internationally. With 83 occupational qualifications on offer and an impressive portfolio of collaborations, including with the RMI, the college continues to provide students with the technical knowledge, work exposure, and entrepreneurial skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing economy.
Louis van Huyssteen, National Training Director of the RMI, who attended the ceremony as a VIP guest, praised the college for its forward-looking approach. “Connecting education to employment isn’t optional – it’s essential to South Africa’s future. It is so critical to be able to connect employers with young graduates, and to create work exposure opportunities ahead of graduation. This is essential for successfully matching employers with the talented young people of South Africa, and the RMI is proud to be able to support these young graduates in this regard.”
Motheo is a shining example of how TVET colleges can build stronger bridges between industry and graduates. “With 23,000 employers and 300,000 employees in the automotive retail aftermarket sector, there is enormous potential for collaboration. With efforts from all role players, we can ensure a greater uptake of talented young people with qualifications into this dynamic sector and together unlock opportunities that not only benefit graduates and their families, but also strengthen our industry and economy,” said van Huyssteen. “The RMI is proud to acknowledge the exceptional work Motheo TVET College continues to do in supporting South Africa’s youth,” concludes van Huyssteen.
