Transport and logistics industry innovation is all about providing real-time visibility, upping efficiency, and automating tasks where possible to save time and money. According to Research and Markets, the market was valued at $9407.5 billion in 2023 and is likely to increase to $15978.2 billion by 2032.
With customer expectations skyrocketing, businesses must strive to unlock new levels of efficiency across their supply chains. And with start-ups entering the market and utilising emerging technologies to improve and augment traditional methods, the pressure is on for the incumbents to keep up.
An interview with Anurag Mehrotra, Head of International Business, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, in terms of the above statements:
How have modern technologies changed the logistics game?
AM - Modern technologies continue to transform the logistics landscape, driving a significant shift in how fleets are managed and optimized. With a focus on efficiency, safety, and sustainability, Tata Motors leads this change by integrating cutting-edge digital solutions. Innovations in truck design, alternate fuels and connected vehicle platforms are delivering smarter, safer, and cost-effective solutions, enhancing fuel efficiency and lowering total cost of operations (TCO).
Tata Motors' robust product portfolio including the Ultra FE+ range launched earlier this year, are built with smart features that perfectly suit the South African trucking requirements, including a walk-through cabin, power steering, and reliable aggregates.
Vehicle innovations, coupled with Fleet Edge, Tata Motors’ connected vehicle system helps fleet managers monitor driving patterns, and overall vehicle usage real-time, ensuring optimal fleet management and efficiency, critical for maintaining delivery timelines in the logistics sector.
What technologies are making the most impact in the logistics space?
AM - Technologies that have a significant impact on logistics include powertrain innovations, connected vehicle platforms, data analytics and AI-driven solutions. While powertrain innovations play a key role in enhancing vehicle performance and fuel efficiency, integration of connected vehicle platforms provide real-time insights into fleet performance, enabling a more efficient route optimization, fuel management, and predictive maintenance.
For instance, the Tata Ultra T.9, suited for a wide variety of applications features a powerful new-generation 3.3L engine, delivering a maximum output of 114 KW and a torque of 450 Nm. Equipped with a GBS 550 6F + 1R gearbox, the Tata Ultra T.9 is designed for tough terrains, ensuring comfortable driving and superior performance. For medium to long-haul cargo transportation, the Tata Ultra T.14 stands out with its robust 5.0L diesel engine, generating 132 KW at 2400 rpm and a torque of 590 Nm. Its GBS 750 Synchromesh gearbox enhances driving comfort, while the dual-circuit full-air S-Cam Brake with ABS provides maximum control and safe braking, even under heavy loads.
In addition, Tata Motors' connected vehicle platform, Fleet Edge, plays a pivotal role in optimizing fleet operations. It delivers real-time data on vehicle location, health, driver behaviour, fuel efficiency, and other key parameters, helping customers optimize costs and streamline operations. With over 700,000 vehicles globally registered on Fleet Edge, it empowers operators with actionable insights for improved efficiency and smarter, data-driven logistics management.
Where do the biggest stumbling blocks lie?
AM - The logistics landscape in South Africa and Africa at large present a unique set of challenges, but also numerous opportunities for growth and development. Key areas impacting the sector include:
• Infrastructure: Despite progress, expansion of infrastructure poses some challenge, impacting seamless logistics operations and efficiency. However, ongoing infrastructure investments are expected to gradually address these issues.
• Technology adoption: While digital transformation is gaining momentum, technology adoption in some regions faces challenges due to infrastructure and digital literacy gaps. Supporting businesses in integrating tech solutions like route optimization and real-time tracking remains essential for improving logistics efficiency and staying competitive.
• Skilled Workforce: There exists a shortage of skilled drivers, but ongoing investments in training are helping to build capacity and adapt to modern technologies in logistics.
