Emanuele Vicentini of Autopromotec and Andrea Debernardis from ANFIA opened the session, highlighting the transformative impact of software-defined vehicles (SDVs) on the aftermarket landscape. They emphasized that as vehicles become increasingly reliant on software, the independent aftermarket must adapt to maintain competitiveness.
Martin Frommer of S&P Global Mobility presented a comprehensive analysis of the challenges posed by SDVs, noting that the integration of advanced software systems in vehicles necessitates new approaches to diagnostics and maintenance. Giuseppe Faranda Cordella from Drivesec underscored the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to protect vehicle data and ensure safe operations.
The panel discussion, moderated by Frank Schlehuber of CLEPA, featured insights from industry leaders:
A recurring theme was the critical importance of data access. Panelists argued that without the ability to access and interpret vehicle data, independent service providers risk obsolescence. They called for regulatory frameworks that ensure fair access to data, enabling competition and innovation in the aftermarket sector. Examples, where access to OE data portals have been inaccessible to aftermarket businesses for periods of time as long as 8 weeks were detailed. “It’s important to point out that during this “downtime” the same servers continuid to be accessed by OE players” noted a commentator.
The session concluded with a consensus on the need for the independent aftermarket to proactively engage with policymakers, invest in cybersecurity capabilities, and foster collaborations to navigate the evolving automotive landscape. As vehicles become more software-centric, the aftermarket's adaptability will be crucial in maintaining its relevance and competitiveness.
This IAM panel at Autopromotec 2025 served as a clear call for the industry to address the intertwined challenges of cybersecurity and competition in the era of software-defined vehicles.
