Bakwena celebrates 20 years of world class infrastructure
On 28 August 2021 Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire (Pty) Ltd (Bakwena) reached an exciting milestone as the company celebrated 20 years of providing world class infrastructure.
Over the years Bakwena has not only maintained and upgraded the N1N4 route but also ensured that it meets international engineering standards. Since 2001, the whole of the N1N4 route (385km) has been fully rehabilitated. Technical enhancements and upgrades of the N1N4 route over the last 20 years ensures road users are provided with safe, world class infrastructure.
Some of the milestone works Bakwena has carried out during the 20-year period include:
Construction of 91km of new road from Kameeldrift interchange to Brits and Rustenburg
Additional carriageway N4 from Buffelspoort to R512
Additional lane added to N1 from Proefplaas to Zambesi
Upgrading of Zambesi interchange to DDI (Diverge Diamond Interchange)
Addition of west facing ramps N4 R511
Additional carriage way N4 from M17 to R512
Simon Everitt, Bakwena’s CEO, reflected on the company’s 20th anniversary by saying “as the CEO of Bakwena, it is with a sense of pride that I look back on the project’s achievements over the last 20 years. Roads form the backbone of the South African Economy and toll roads are an example of how private and government have collaborated to provide infrastructure which provides the economy with a much-needed boost. The Bakwena N1N4 route is part of the important Trans-Kalahari Corridor, a regional development corridor, providing a coast-to-coast link from Walvis Bay in Namibia to Maputo in Mozambique”.
