Always check credentials - Beware of imposters
The Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) is advising consumers to be cautious when choosing a workshop or repairer, as there have been cases of businesses misrepresenting themselves as RMI members. Your car is one of your most valuable assets – and caring for it properly is essential for your safety and peace of mind.
In a recent case highlighted on national television, a business in Krugersdorp falsely claimed to be accredited by the RMI. Concerned clients, worried about the potential impact on their warranties or insurance claims, received verbal confirmation that the business was a member. In reality, it was not – leaving them vulnerable and with limited recourse.
“We continue to see situations like this across the country,” says RMI CEO, Ipeleng Mabusela. “Consumers place their trust in the RMI name, and we want to remind them of the importance of always checking credentials before handing over their car.”
How to protect yourself
• If you would like to take your car to an independent aftermarket specialist, always choose an accredited RMI member.
• Don’t rely on verbal claims – verify membership through the official RMI website.
• Look for the certificate – accredited members display a membership certificate with a scannable QR code that confirms validity and good standing.
• Always check Social Media comments and visit sites like Hello Peter to check any negative customer reviews
The RMI continues to raise awareness through media and social channels on how motorists can avoid being misled. “Our mission is to set the benchmark for ethical, professional service in the automotive aftermarket,” adds Mabusela. “When you choose an RMI-accredited business, you can be assured of proper recourse, technical expertise, and a commitment to transparency.”
If you suspect a business is misrepresenting itself, please report it immediately through one of the RMI’s whistle-blower hotlines.
